And, let be clear, I'm not hating on grommet drapes. I accept them in some rooms, and they look great. Simply if you're going for a more than polished expect, there'south nothing quite like the wait of a pleated mantle.
The fact is that these days, y'all can detect gorgeous, affordable drapes at many home retailers. But about of them have grommets, which is non helpful if you're aiming for a crisp, pleated look.
The good news is that with this unproblematic pall hack, you lot tin can make pleated drapes from grommet curtains easily!
My Piece of cake, No-Sew Curtain Hack: Pleated Drapes from Grommet Defunction
OK, so in example y'all didn't hear me earlier, this grommet curtain hack is NO SEW. Like, every bit in, you practice non demand ANY sewing skills, and definitely non a sewing machine, to transform your basic, store-bought grommet panels into the expect of custom-made pleated curtain. What? I know! It's mind-blowing, isn't it? All y'all need are a few basic supplies and a half hour of your time.
What Y'all'll Demand
- Grommet curtains – preferably 2-3 panels per side of window for fullness.
- Curtain clip rings – 8 per grommet console, with ring size to match your curtain rod size.
- Curtain rod – well, obviously.
- Fabric steamer – optional.
Step-by-Step Instructions: Grommet Curtains to Pleated Drapes
So, here are the easy-peasy step-by-step instructions!
___
Step 1: Fold grommets down at top seam.
First, lay your grommet curtain out, and fold the top panel (with the grommets) down at the seam.
Step Two: Attach drape clip rings.
Second, attach curtain clip rings to your grommet panels.
Clip rings ordinarily come in packs of eight, and you'll need 8 clip rings per grommet panel. To achieve the fullness in the room photo higher up, I used six grommet panels – three on each side of my window. And so I needed to buy six packs of clip rings. You tin buy clip rings at fabric stores, and most home retailers that sell pall.
With your grommet console laid out, attach the clip rings above each grommet. With the exception of each end (which I'll prove y'all side by side), centre each prune band in the centre of each circle. Spacing your clip rings evenly will ensure even folds when you lot hang your drapes.
On each terminate, attach your clip ring at the corner so that it helps to close the open up gap from your fold. You lot might also desire to sew a little sew or 2 at the bottom corner, merely information technology's not necessary. I didn't sew annihilation, and they yet look great.
Echo this step for all your panels.
Step Three: Hang drapes on curtain rod.
Third, slip each drapery console onto your curtain rod.
Once y'all have them on there, yous'll want to shape them into folds which will class the basis for crisp pleats.
Starting at one stop of the panel, pull the fabric betwixt the first two clip rings toward y'all to create an 'out fold'. Now, between the second and third clip rings, press the fabric inward to course an 'in fold'. The metallic grommets (which are now at the dorsum of the panel) actually help create a stiffness to the top of the drape which prevents the folds from sagging, and gives a dainty crisp look.
Continue this process until you lot become to the terminate of y'all panel. You should end up with 4 'out folds' and three 'in folds' per panel.
Repeat this folding process for all your curtain panels.
Pace Four: Create well-baked pleats from the folds.
Your piece of work is well-nigh done! (I know, soooo easy, right?) At present, all you need to practise is make those folds a footling crisper all the manner to the bottom of the panels.
To do this, I placed the folds between my fingers, and pulled the pleats tight downward to the lesser of each console, most like a comb.
Side by side, to firm upwardly the pleats, I used my steamer. If y'all don't take 1 like this, don't worry virtually it. You can only tie a little cord around all the panels (per end) for a week or so to go them to have shape.
A few things to note:
- This curtain hack is a perfect option for decorative side panels. But information technology's probably not the all-time option if y'all need to open and close your panels constantly for privacy. If so, you'll lose the crispness of the pleats over time.
- You'll lose a few inches of drape length (when you fold the top seam downwardly), so in guild to forestall your drapes from looking likewise curt, y'all tin : (a) move your pall rod downward or (b) buy longer drapes (e.one thousand., 96 inches instead of 83 inches) which will then 'puddle' at the floor which is a really fashionable look.
